History

The Gulgong Prince of Wales Opera House is a historic building located in Gulgong, New South Wales, Australia. It is the oldest still-operating Opera House in the Southern Hemisphere.

It was built between 1871 and 1873 by John Hart Cogden to serve as a community hall for the town’s residents. The building was named after the then-Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VII.

In its early years, the Gulgong Prince of Wales Opera House served as a venue for various events such as concerts, plays, and dances. It also functioned as a courthouse and a schoolroom during some periods. The building underwent several renovations over time to accommodate different uses. In 1970, it was purchased by the Gulgong Amateur Musical and Dramatic Society (MADS).

The Gulgong Prince of Wales Opera House now serves as a museum showcasing the town’s rich history and culture. It is also used for various cultural events such as concerts, plays, and exhibitions. The building has been recognized as an important heritage site and is listed on the State Heritage Register of New South Wales.

This classic building is still owned and managed by the Gulgong Amateur Musical and Dramatic Society. Many generations have seen their first theatrical production under this historic roof.

In 2023 Gulgong MADS Inc. was successful in receiving a $246,286 grant from the NSW Government through the Creative Capital Funding Program. The works’ program submitted is now nearing completion and has successfully addressed some important, and much needed, storage, access and compliance issues. In addition to the works originally planned, through the careful management of the Project, it has also been possible to fund: new downstairs seating; new window and doorway curtains; and new carpet in the foyer and downstairs entryway.

These upgrades have improved access for all and will certainly enhance user and visitor enjoyment of our unique historic theatre which we are now keen to share with everyone.
